What I Wish I Knew Before Starting in Insurance. Lessons from My First Year in Insurance

leads

When I first started in insurance, I thought it would be easy. You call a few people, they say “yes,” and boom—you’re successful. Spoiler alert: it doesn’t work that way.

Looking back on my first year, here are a few things I wish someone had told me before I jumped in:

1. Rejection is part of the process, don’t take it personally.

In the beginning, every “no” felt like a punch to the gut. But here’s the thing: it’s not about you. People say “no” for a million reasons that have nothing to do with your skills or effort. Shake it off, learn from it, and keep going.

2. Relationships matter more than anything.

Clients don’t just want a policy, they want someone they can trust. Building relationships takes time, but it’s worth it. A good relationship today could turn into a referral next year.

3. Don’t be afraid to ask for help.

I thought I had to figure everything out on my own, but the truth is, there’s no shame in leaning on others for advice. Whether it’s a mentor, a colleague, or even a podcast, learning from others will save you so much time.

Conclusion:

The first year in insurance is tough, but it’s also full of opportunities to grow. If you’re just starting out, know this: you’re not alone. Keep learning, keep connecting, and remember that every “no” gets you closer to a “yes.”
